Welcome to semanticgrid.org, the Semantic Grid community portal. The Semantic Grid is an extension of the current Grid in which information and services are given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation. We believe that this approach is essential to achieve the full richness of the Grid vision, with a high degree of easy-to-use and seamless automation enabling flexible collaborations and computations on a global scale.
This project mainly solves three key problems: normal reorganization of network resources, semantic interconnections, and intelligent clustering. This research team will endeavor to explore and develop fundamental theory, model, method and key technologies on Semantic Grid. They aim at developing a series of theories and methods on multi-level semantic interconnection, intelligent clustering, and intelligent interconnection environment and tools for effective sharing and managing network resources, and applying to economy, culture, education, medicine, defense, public services domains in order to realize effective use of information and knowledge resources among different domains.
The Internet and World Wide Web are milestones of information sharing. IT professionals are in the critical historical stage of creating the new brilliance - a new interconnection environment. Semantics and knowledge have become the kernel issues in developing the new environment. The 1st International Conference on Semantics, Knowledge and Grid (SKG 2005) is to bring together researchers and practitioners in areas of knowledge and intelligence, semantics, and grid computing to share their visions, research achievements and solutions to real problems, to attack the challenge issues, and to establish worldwide cooperative research and development.

To allow business and people to rapidly, and easily, establish virtual organizations to share information, services and computing resources, a team of European researchers are laying the technological foundations that will open the door to the era of the Semantic Grid.
Working under the IST program-funded OntoGrid project, they are catalyzing the evolution of the Grid from a distributed network of computers in which the meaning of information is implicit and hidden into a medium that will allow computers, as well as humans, to interpret and share semantically enriched data.
Semantic Web ideas, tools and technologies have now been applied in Grid applications and middleware for over 3 years. These Semantic Grid activities span the globe and have been a particular feature of activities in the UK e-Science programme and in the Grid projects funded by the European Commission, together with significant activities in USA and in China. Best practice is emerging as the first phase of projects has now completed.
ARGUGRID aims at providing a new model for programming the Grid at a semantic, knowledge-based level of abstraction through the use of argumentative agent technology. Agents are associated with service/resource requestors and service/resource providers on the Grid. Argumentation technology is used to support rational decision making, internal to agents, as well as negotiation, amongst agents, all required facilitating the dynamic composition of Grid services/resources into executable workflows. Argumentation is also used to support the creation, management and dynamic evolution of virtual organisations, understood as societies of agents, to compose individual services into more complex ones.
